Close-up of Janome 134D MyLock OverlockerThe Sewing Machine Doctor services & repairs all types, models & brands of overlockers & coverstitch machines, domestic sewing machines & embroidery machines. This list below categorises the main features you’ll find in around 95% of overlockers & coverstitch machines. There are some variations—such as coverstitch-only machines, however this guide is intended to give a general overview of most of the domestic overlockers & coverstitch machines available over the last 20-30 years.

When you are considering purchasing a new overlocker or coverstitch machine, use the information provided here as a basic guide to the features you are looking for & what extras you anticipate you will use. If you splash out on a top-of-the-line overlocker or coverstitch machine, but use only a few functions you may have overspent by as much as $1000 for these functions. On the other hand however, if you are looking to gain more sewing skills, have a particular need & want to increase your sewing time in the future, it may be wise to buy a machine you will grow into. For instance, you may want to start a home-based business in the future—so the extra functionality & control of a more expensive machine will be handy when the time comes to do that efficient, bulk sewing work.

The Sewing Machine Doctor is happy to point you in the right direction if you wish. Just send me an email at with your enquiry & I will try to help you sort through the different models & myriad features so you can narrow down the options & make an informed decision. I have no specific brand preference. I simply prefer to try to match people to a machine based on their budget, experience & needs.

NOTE: There are some variations to the above. There are some Coverstitch-only machines available for instance, which if you have the space & budget, are a good option for the time they save in setup. As with any sewing machine however, The Sewing Machine Doctor suggests it is wise to be honest with yourself when purchasing an overlocker, as to what functions you will realistically need. Features that are not used have still cost you money, and for most home sewers a normal 4-thread overlocker will handle all that is needed.

If you have questions & would like further information to help you come to an informed decision when considering purchasing an overlocker or coverstitch machine, contact me via email at & I will answer any queries you may have & help you as best I can.
